I'm afraid the SWIG bindings are not in good shape in the latest (develop) version of PolyVox. The problem is that the PolyVox API is often undergoing changes and the SWIG bindings are not kept up-to-date as we don't use them ourselves. You might get them to work in the last stable release (0.2.1) but unfortunately I don't have much knowledge of how they are set up.
If you can't get them to work then you have a couple of other options. If you just need surface extraction then to be honest it will be easier to just use an implementation in Java (I'm sure you can find some around the web). If you also need other aspects of PolyVox (volume handling, etc) then you could probably write a thin C/C++ wrapper around the parts of PolyVox that you need and then expose that to SWIG. This is probably the approach we take if we bring back language bindings in the future.
