I started working on a component object system. Almost there. By the end of the week I hope to be able to have a bunch of characters (I'm trying to make a Dwarf Fortress clone but with weirdness and maybe futuristic alien shit Haha no but definitely I want to have lots of violence) running around mining.

Yep, it's really great to see the forums come to life over the last six months. Of course, we mostly have Minecraft to thank for that :-)

I think you are right about Minecraft. As a daily Ogre forums lurker, I have been following PolyVox's development since you posted the first video of the destructible brick wall in that small green room - but I didn't start trying to actually use the PolyVox library until I played Minecraft for the first time about 2 months ago.

Still, I think Minecraft barely scratches the surface of what is possible with a Voxel based environment.

Hi,

I have known about Thermite for quite a while but didn't dare invest myself too much in it because I was still looking for a game engine "for humans" at the time.

I worked some time as a game designer in the video game industry and am now on indie projects, using the Unity engine.

The PolyVox library strikes me as a very adaptive approach to mesh generation, one which I'd like to use for my own projects as it empowers players to seriously influence their surroundings, and the obvious terrain features. So it's a full circle comeback, of sorts.

I am mainly here to try and figure out how to leverage the mesh generation parts of PolyVox into a useable form for the Unity engine.

yeah I agree we're only scratching the surface with "Minecraft".

I mean seriously MC did turn me on to the whole voxel thing but I guess i was uninformed. I definitely knew what voxel were and of course heard about marching cubes and metaballs, etc. It's just I never connected that with fun games, even though I've played games like Worms3d. It just didn't click for me until Minecraft.

But now I think about it, I think voxel games are the future. It's just so malleable. I love sandbox and RPG games, but I also have a thing for realistic shooters (I play on severs that have tactical realism rules: http://www.the82ndab.net/). It's the future hehe.

Actually I have also never played Minecraft :-) I've watched the videos on YouTube and have watched someone else play it, but haven't played it myself.

I thought I was onto a new idea with voxels until I saw Ken Silverman's voxlap engine - still an amazing peice of technology. And of course I totally agree that there's a lot of potential for the future.

Hey fellow Developers,

Since I will likely become a frequent poster in these forums over the next few months I figured I would introduce myself.

I am GM Riscvul and I am currently at work on my senior project in college. I am creating a real-time voxel terrain generation engine. My focus is on the terrain generation algorithms, and I hope to be able to populate the terrain with plants, rivers, and roads once the prerequisites are complete.

I am also an Indie Game developer. A friend and I have a blog at http://www.novaboxstudios.com. We currently have two projects in the works, one as a combination effort with the local ACM chapter, and the other a solo project.

If my senior project is a success, I would love to carry the Polyvox Library onto future projects.

I'll be posting more soon.

Hi everyone!
I am an Italian guy with several interests. A part from the common ones (games, computer science in general, girls, etc) I also am really into math (and related topics, like cellular automata or tessellations) and sometimes even into physics (studying quantum and general relativity!)

I must say being in the university takes out a lot of space, but I am usually that kind of person that when starts one project, can't stop thinking about that, no matter what I'm doing ^^

I have come here to kick *** and chew bubble gum, and I'm all out of bubble gum... Not really, I've come here because I am interested in voxels technology, infiniminer-like games and I think that C++ should be the "real" language for game programming :P

I actually had done some little work elsewhere, but nothing major. I am not a programmer in the strict sense, even if I adventured into different projects (GUI "office helper", map downloader scripts, contributions in procedural generation in games, etc).

I really hope to find a nice community around this awesome project!
